Chapter Seven

Driving past the iron gates led me down a long, enclosed driveway, the passage taking me completely from sight of the road. The car’s main beam threw a cold, shadowy light over the unoccupied land around me, and once I passed the overgrown hedges and crumpling walls of the entrance, the view of the cottage crept into view. The place I was to now call home.

My vehicle was brought to a permanent stop for the first time in four hundred and ninety miles and was now left to peacefully slumber for the remainder of the night. My back sharply stiffened with pain when I moved sluggishly from the long-seated position.

I looked up to the night sky and then down to the shadowed house, momentarily stretching to loosen the discomfort that sat unpleasantly between my joints. I circled my stance, and a frown settled swiftly across my puzzled face, the conclusion quickly hitting me that no one was here to meet me. Not a soul.

I swiftly peered through the small black windows of the cottage in the hope someone waited for my arrival. It was doubtful. It seemed rather evident that no message had been left by the sales agent my brother had mentioned to me. No, there was nothing. No sales agent, no message. And no indication in sight that anyone had even been here prior to my arrival. Frustrated was not a strong enough description of my emotions at that moment. To have no one meet me here was absolutely unbelievable, and damn well unprofessional, considering the lengthy journey that I’d made that day.
